anyone run auto tranny without fluid and survive..

My front seal blew and the car was run till it would move. Then the wife restarted while she waited for a tow(the car was turned off in between). I drained about half a quart from the pan. Question is, do I spend the couple hundred for the front seal and hope my trans works, or can someone tell me that it will definately be a paperweight?

the tranny is probably ok, make sure that the bushing directly behind the seal in the front pump is not bad, when this bushing screws up it makes the seal blow
