Sounds like the head will be HOT when done! I wonder what kinds of performance gains you'll get out of the cam -- did they regrind it to get rid of scoring, or ?

Stopped by the shop today to see how my head was coming along...
They have the head back together except for the camshaft and rocker arms (camshaft is out getting a regrind), the exhaust arrived, my car is dusty as anything from sitting in the shop since Dec. Does anyone (non-do-it-yourselfers) find it very uncomfortable to be staring at the tops of their pistons?

And the "new" head. New valves, new guides and seals (aftermarket) with some custom machine work done. New rocker arms too, i saw the old ones, they were all sorts of nicked up. Dude's been doing engine work since the 50s (started with American muscle, made the move to BMWs when his son got him a grey-market 323i in 85).
I should have her back on Friday next week. I can't wait.

The backside of the cam lobes are ground to increase duration. Cam hardness would be compromised with a regrind on the cam lobes.

I was told that there aren't really any downsides to what they do to it. I'm not sure of the exact process, but the guy that recomended it has it done on his car and said he was very happy. They wouldn't make any extra money out of it as the cam is the one thing they outsource. We'll see how it goes...

Paper Gaskets Suck!
looks like some "grinding" was done to the exhaust ports... secret speed trick goin on there? LOL Looks good though. Im not so sure about regrinding the cam, regrinding the base circle will enable more specific lift and duration numbers as long as it works with the ECM. Hope they re-treat the cam after grinding.

Yeah, they did some gridning on the ports (I think, he enlarged something, I forget what). With all the new hardware it should be a very nice motor. The cam is being done by a place that basically only restores cams. The shop has used them several times before and been very happy. The guy that worked my head had a cam from them done just like mine for his E28 533i and is absolutely in love with it.

so that you can enjoy a nice ride with the "new" engine.
Always a big moment.
