Is there any way of reconditioning the power steering pump on a 520i M20 as it sounds like the bearings are about to fail, and after replacing the power steering pump is there any bleeding required.

I am awaiting an email from the owner of the site, but if anybody else has the info then please let me know. :-)
I rebuilt my power steering pump a couple years ago. Eric rebuilt his pump also. There isn't much too the job. Guess I should have taken pictures.
The hardest part of the job is convincing yourself to break the pump halves apart. The new gaskets have made things very quiet.
I think JubJub has the pump from the parts car. If he ever orders a gasket kit, we'll take some pictures & post.
erased due to slander
can order the gasket from bma or from bmw as Martin said and here's the procedure.![]()

When I forst got my 520i, it had the same grinding sound... then one day, the thing just broke (the drive shaft snapped)... I just decided to get a new unit. Less problems, and one less system to worry about. Cost me $400. Not cheap, but with my 18" rims, I think a new pump was more necessary.
Yes, bleeding is needed after you change the pump.
Thanks for all your help , Can anyone tell me how to bleed the power steering on a M20, thanks
Bump, my steering is getting heavy despite having turkey-basted out the reservoir and replacing with fresh ATF 2-3 times. The bottom of the car, the rack, and the lines are all dry. I just went through this with my 928 and re-sealed the PS pump, it's easy to do, just wanted to see whether there are any gotchas on the E34 pump. Bill, might you have the images from the above post that are missing?

Looking at realoem for a '95 525iT, no ASC+T, no self leveling, it appears there's a vane pump gasket set 32411137707 for about $30. I'll call Patrick and get it and some banjo washers and see how it goes.

that is also interesting for me, I cannot get any repair kit in Japan for the power steering pump.
So far I heard that
Harry's steering can rebuild yours for about $150-$200

As for E32 750:
For the ASC+T there seems to be no repair kit available on realoem, I checked for a 1992/12 750iL. The online shops such as Autohaus Arizona only sell reman kits. In our part of the world we cannot buy a set for repairing the steering box, safety regulations, no one will sell you a set, even if it might be available. Therefore I am looking for a set maybe from USA, so if someone knows, let me have the link.
Straight forward to repair the pump? Don't know yet, never done, but we will try.
Fugo from the German forum has done it

You might have to register at

But he does not live in Germany but in a former Eastern Europe country, that is maybe why he got the gaskets.
Engine has to be lifted and some steering parts have to come out, as far as I can see from the pics I posted before.
To change the pressure hoses is very easy or relatively easy. You just need a long extension. And do not tighten the banjo bolts too tight, they might break. Also replace the copper gaskets/rings.
I replaced them all, went to a shop for hydraulics and they cut off the crimp pieces and crimped new pressure hoses on it. Much cheaper than new hoses. But Autohaus Arizona also has good prices on these.

So if someone could tell me where I could get a repair kit for that one, thanks in advance
