IIRC it's the same car. Someone on Roadflea's E34 M5 board was wondering about it and Pat P. posted that he had checked this car out thoroughly and it had been/is a 525 that someone had transferred everything from a wrecked 3.8L M5 into. He stated they had done a pretty good job, but still...
Yes, you're right, any E34 of that year would have (the dreaded) wide grill.
