Changer won't load CD after manual eject. Help!

got this six disc changer for my 93 Touring from a friend. He was in nasty accident, so when changer was removed from his total wreck a disk was still in play, so magazine wouldn't eject.

After reading many posts, I took off outer cover of changer, pushed the eject arm, and removed all the loose disks. Plugged it in, inserted magazine, and the last disc (the one "in play") was moved into magazine, allowing me to remove it too.

Cycled several times with magazine but no discs. then insert several discs, and the changer/radio won't even acknowledge their presence. So, they won't load to play, and won't even show up as being in the magazine.

Anyone face this? Any help would be appreciated, as I'd like to be able to salvage this changer.
