    Default noise problem

    my 93 318is has a noise that sounds like tire noise, but after rotating and changing the tires the noise is still there. any ideas?

    the e30 and e36 are well known for eating rear wheel bearings, this is not a easy repair, it can not be done without the special tools and even then it can be a major bitch if the axle has rusted into the hub (about half do this) and if you miss a step you can destroy the new bearing. the best way to find which side it is, is get the rear on jack stands and let the car idle in gear and use a stethiscope on the sheet metal brake shield which amplifys the bearing noise, if you don't have a stethiscope a screwdriver pressed handle end to your ear is almost as good
