Ok Can someone tell me how to turn on my cruise control on my 89 535i? I've tried pushing the switch that says accel , dece, resume etc but i don't see anything that says set or on ?!?

There is no way of knowing that cruise control is activated, apart from the car driving itself!!
it only works above about 25mph...
get to the speed you want to then press the button forward i think it is and then take you foot off the pedal and it should stay there, you can use the control to accelorate without using the pedal and slow and stop
pressing the clutch or brake will also turn it off.

I have to push the control forward for a couple of seconds, usually until I feel the pedal move and the car accelerate, otherwise it doesn't come on. A quick push won't activate it, at least not on my car.
quick push is all thats required, any more and you engage the option to increase speed rather then set it to what you are travelling at that time.
however a few seconds shouldnt increase it by much
