320d or 523i

Hi!
I'm lookin around to and maybe i will change car!

I'v been looking at 1998 320d and here in Norway the price is the same as 1997 523i. I like the 320 diesel-engine! But what would be the best buy!?

What is there to look for at the diesel? Any common failures? How are the E39 523i?

We don't have the newer Bimmer Diesels here in the States, so I could not tell you how good or bad they are. I'm sure being a Diesel it'll run forever. But I'd say your real question should involve fuel prices and need for space. What's fuel costs for Diesel vs Gas there?

Here i Norway diesel cost NOK: 7,50Kr/liter and 95oct Gas NOK: 9Kr/liter.

FYI: USD: 1$ = NOK: 8Kr
1liter=???gallon!?

A 320d has 136hp@4500rpm and 300Nm@1800rpm (up to 2002, now 150hp)
It does 0-100km/h in 9sek. and topspeed at 210km/h

This is nearly the same as an 523i, but fuel-econmy is far much better.

The E46 is more modern that the E39 and it's a very nice car.

I haven't heard anything about the BMW-diesel and failures and that i'm asking here!

I know somebody dont like diesel in a BMW! But it is a fast car! Look to the new E60 530d: 218hp@4500rpm and 500Nm@2000rpm
It does 0-100km/h on 7.1sec. Topspeed at 245km/h
Fuelconsumption: 0.07liter/km

It kills the 530i at 50-100km/h and 70-120km/h!
