How to tell which tranny is in the car ?
Hi All,
The car is 535 iA/89 and i heared that some auto trannys came with 4 speed and others with 5. How can i know which one i have.

Next time you're in the car...look down at your gear shift handle and take a look at the letters and numbers next to the lever. If it reads PRND321...this means your transmission is a 4-speed...drive, 3rd, 2nd, & 1st.
If it reads PRND432 ...then your transmission is a 5-speed.

The 535 only came with the 4 speed

the e34 535 auto in the usa (i can't speak for the rest of the world) only came with a ZF 4hp-22eh which is a 4 speed od with a lock up torque converter, there was 2 different computer control systems, a early and late the early selected sport mode from the switch by the shifter (E S M) and the late you select sport by putting it in 3rd and the switch only selects auto or manual
