Default What did I find in my splash guard?

I was under my 540i today getting ready to flush my coolant when I noticed something odd in the rearmost splash guard. I took it down to find this odd piece of something just sitting there. It wasn't attached to anything and it did not appear to fit anywhere nearby. Am I going insane? Did my indy forget something last time he was under there? Can anyone identify this part? It's pictured below.

Aparently it was made in the USA...

I cleaned it up for the pictures..

Just a shot in the dark - it's not part of a clutch centring tool is it?

Could it be a broken idler pulley or belt tensioner? I had a bad idler pulley and found it down there.
