I was under my 540i today getting ready to flush my coolant when I noticed something odd in the rearmost splash guard. I took it down to find this odd piece of something just sitting there. It wasn't attached to anything and it did not appear to fit anywhere nearby. Am I going insane? Did my indy forget something last time he was under there?Can anyone identify this part? It's pictured below.
Aparently it was made in the USA...
I cleaned it up for the pictures..

looks like some sort of centering tool part... give it back and maybe youll get a better deal next time you go in for service.

Could it be a broken idler pulley or belt tensioner? I had a bad idler pulley and found it down there.
Road debris, likely not from your car?
