they aren't too terribly different. the 535i is a LOT more powerful than the 525i M20. Both require somewhat the same maintenance, as they're very similarly designed motors.

no cam belt on the 535, the tranny on the 535 is electronicly controled, that's about it besides small stuff, the 535 is going to want it's cooling system mantained or it may cough up it's head gasket from corrosion or overheating a little sooner then the 525
