    Default HG Question

k.. finally got motivated enuff to pull the head off of the beast... found the problem with the headgasket.. channel rusted out at the very back enough to allow coolant to leak.. my question is.. do i need to get the head re-surfaced?

Default Kingmak, you've got a very good opportunity here.

Find a good machinist to check the head. It may need new valve guides & resurfacing. Bolt the front timing cover to the head when dropping the head off at the machinist's. It will need to be skimmed with the head.

I did a 'pre-emptive' head gasket job just a while ago. It was a good opportunity to install a regrind 284 cam and have new valve guides installed. There was trace evidence near the rear-most cylinder (#6) of impending head gasket failure. This was most clear on the aluminum cylinder head, not the head gasket.
