On the 540i 5HP30 tranny, where is the trans oil cooler? ETK looks like it's part of the assembly up front by the radiator.

theres a water line running down from each side if the engine to the cooler that mounted on the bottom of the tranny 17 22 1 728 944 and 17 22 1 728 943 $63.25 list each, the cooler is mounted directly to the tranny with no fluid lines just o-rings

the cooler that comes up on my etk here at work 17221723916 is mounted to the bottom of the tranny infront of the pan and behind the engine crossmember, it is cooled by two hoses one from by the back of each head while the cooler it's self is atached directly to the tranny and is sealed to it with o-rings, the 530 shows a radiator mounted cooler on some models but the 740/540 has a tranny mounted heat exchanger

While Motorsports has been a good source for me, I always like to have alternatives. FYI, I have been doing more and more of my own maintenance and small repairs. The car has never run better since it recieves almost constant attention. :-)

as you can see from my detailed breakdown above, i had my transmission filter changed (i provided this part), new ATF, and a new oil cooler. due to these symptoms.

this was all done by the guys at European Motors. their place is exceptionally nice and they seem to know what they are doing. my fathers Jaguars are now serviced there. this was the first time for the BMW though. their labor rate is relatively low ($65/hr) but i recommend that you provide the parts. they have no problem with this. (they charged me $380+freight for an ATF cooler when i could have gotten one from BMA for more than half that!)

Mmm... I spent some time down there working on my valve body... didn't notice such thing down there... maybe it is hidden above that structural plate.
