If there is any way to get a mechanic to it they have a little tool that tests for exactly what part is giving you the problem. My 92 735iL suddenly died while cruising down the highway. I cleaned the crank sensor to no avail. Changed the coil and that still didn't help. Finally changing the ECU fixed it.
This happened to my old 525i, and it turned out to be a burnt wire in the harness.

The AA were right on it in diagnosing the fuel pump and when my mechanic checked it, sure enough it was.
A new one in NZ plus fitting cost me $NZ800.
