Pull the plug that is on the side of the radiator out (if it is like the 535i) and short the brown wire with one of the other wire, check if the fan works, then try to short the brown wire with the other wire, check the fan function again.
One is the slow speed the other the high speed...

You mean the blower fan in the cabin or the auxilliary radiator fan?

Usually if the blower fan in the cabin only works on high (#4 in my car, '90535) then it probably is the fan resistor. The early ones have the "sword", later E34's have resistor pack. Bruno's site has good repair descriptions.
