Change it with Dexron III!
Do a search and see the steps I discussed about changing tranny fluid...it should be done in multiple intervals and not in one sitting.
I'm sure this has been discussed before, but what tranny fluid do you guys recommend on an 89 535i automatic? I've got a new filter, and sunny weather, so I'm going to change it. I don't believe the previous owner ever changed the fluid, and the car has 220,000 miles. The gasket leaks around the pan, so I've been adding a quart of high milage Dexron III about every other month, but the fluid is still brown, but does not smell burnt, and the transmission shifts fine. I just want to stop cleaning the spots off the driveway.

as you will not get out all old fluid in one time, make it 2-3 times in intervals.
Change the filter too.
Make sure you use the correct fluid!!! No mix match with these boxes.
Just change the fluid that comes out with the fluid change, do not flush it!
Change the filter in increments of 15-20K miles along with the fluid that comes out and you should be good to go.
