thats gross, vacuum that out. Looks like it's old sludge that's starting to dissolve. I use synthetic and never see that stuff.

Oil changes at regular intervals. In fact the valve cover was last taken off in the past year, and I just changed the oil in the past 2 months. It's got under 155k miles on it. Does this look like sludge from excess moisture, or from overfilled oil?

A few months ago, about 1-1.5 liters of oil "disappeared", dipstick was completely dry so I added that much. Within a few days it was showing as way overfilled on dipstick. Is it possible that oil was getting trapped somewhere? After this last oil change I've pulled the valve cover and discovered this. I scooped it up as best I could with paper towels, and drained some oil. It seems like a very fast build up of sludge and I'm going to pull the cover this weekend again to check the condition.

After reading this what do you suggest? http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/showt...36967#poststop
Is it worth putting seafoam through it for a few hundred miles?

yeah, I dont know whats going on there. I dont think overfilling it would do anything.........drain all the sludge (oil). I dont know why the sludge is building up so quickly but its not normal. I use cheap mineral oil and never see that stuff.

Typically Mobil 1 for the last change I used some walmart brand because it was unclear why the oil level had dropped so fast.

I'm thinking that it was getting trapped somewhere and the walmart oil broke it up? That at least would explain all that sludge suddenly and the low/overfill situation.
