Default OT: Test your powers of observation

Before you look at the picture, imagine you are travelling north on the M40 from London and you want to go to Birmingham. You are doing 70mph when you see this sign. (AFIK its unique in the UK). You have 3 seconds to look a the pic and decide if you want the left or right lane:

I go past this one regularly, being a dirty southerner with parents in the north...

I dont even bother looking at it these days, you take left lane to go north via the toll road, or right lane to get stuck in the dreaded birmingham traffic

Where left is right and right is left - only in a traffic engineer's world.

Don't they both go to Birmingham (sort of)? I usually go to right to the M6 and pass Birmingham as quickly as possible not that you can go very fast past birmingham!

If you keep to the right that takes you to the M5 But yeah you can go either way though eastbound on the M42 is probably shorter. The sign doesnt list a town or city and says you can only go north or west. IIRC the dotted black line up the middle of the sign wasnt there when they put it up originally.
