I don't think the m20 one is the 4hp22eh in yours, it doesn't have the mode selector by the shifter. iirc it is the 4hp22h, not the eh.
Does anybody know for sure if the 4HP22/EH tranny in a 1989 525i is the exact same and interchangeable with the 4HP22/EH tranny in a 1990 535i?

IMHO the only way to be sure is if they have the same BMW part number. In the case of the 4HP22EH it will be 1043 010 XXX. There are about a dozen different formats :

I suspect the one I found nearby from an E34 525i may not fit. Its number is 1043 010666, a number not found on the Ashcroft link.
Anybody know where to buy just the pump? I suspect that's the fault in mine.
Otherwise, I wish I could find a reasonably priced 5 speed with ancillary conversion parts such as floor pedal, master/slave cylinders, etc.. Thoughts?

The bell housings are different but the good thing is that you can change them over so take off the m30 one and bolt up your m20 housing and it should work.
Also make sure the gbox your buying has the same amount of pins as the one youve got now. 7pin or 8pin.
Probably means these:

Yep the pins for the electrical plug
