The last one I chased after went for $2-300 bucks

Is there a PN to order one brand new? [do I need an M5 VIN to pull one up?]

get an M5 VIN from the Roundel magazine and look up the aprt number, but the US dealer will give you a price of around $800 + a special charge to get it from Germany. My contact @ my local dealer was only able to get it down to $550, for the rear. Good luck.
