I have a 1988 BMW 535i and I have 220/55 vr 390 tires that are severly worn. I am having a difficult time finding the same size tire. I dont care to have these exact tires. What are some size alternatives? Will P195/70SR14 fit on the same rim?

No- Those are metric and only that size will work. Regular tires WILL NOT FIT. Those wheels are 15.3" in diameter.
Throw them away and pick up a set of cheap E34 15" bottlecaps. You should be able to find some for cheap with tires already mounted. Check the Roadfly classifieds.

Try eBay. I'm sure you could find a very good deal there for 15" wheels.
