Car heats up fast

I noticed that the temp gauge rises quite rapidly in my 535. Is this normal in a bimmer? I start it up, let it idle for maybe 30-60 sec. and then I pull away. I don't really get on it but about 3-4 blocks away, the temps is up to normal.

I've never had a car's gauge do this. Does it sound normal?

Yup - within 5 mins mine is sitting at 12 o'clock

You're all good. Mine was taking forever to reach the middle so I swapped it out for a brand new unit from the dealer: Ever since it's been up to temp in no time - just the way i like it!

I can only imagine what you swapped in at a dealer :-p new car? Just messing with ya. I bet it was the thermostat. That'll play a big role in how a car gets up to temp. I used to run a low temp t-stat and it'd take longer to warm up than my current 80 degree standard temperature unit. HTH

Sorry it just seemed obvious that the thermo would be responsible for getting the car up to temperature!

I didnt even notice you hadnt said what you replaced But of course it could have been the radiator blinds

A lot of new cars seem to take forever to get up to operating temperature, but with my 535 it seems to get hot almost instantaneously. I have an 80 degree t-stat in there which might be why, I'm going to put in a slightly cooler one when I swap the head.

My 530 does what yours does, my 525 takes miles to reach middle temp position!

there is a delay in most sending units for display so that people dont freak when things would normally jump up and down. Your gauge says cold until the delay kicks in saying it better send a more realistic number and thats when it kicks in where you see it pop to center line (or wherever).
