If you are doing both upper and lower at the same time, undo the three bolts at the strut knuckle and drop them both out of the car. Now you can do the pickle fork thing on the drive. Usually takes one or two whacks to break the joints. You can then mock them up on the floor and put the whole deal back in one side at a time. It goes without saying that if you are also doing the struts, this is the time to do them since the only thing holding the strut in is the three nuts at the strut bearing.
Be sure to tighten the bushing ends of the control arms under load.
