Now that's not based on any fact that I have... just a gut.

the small 6 verses the big 6 sharing the same 5 speed just doesnt' seem like it'd be the case.....

No, the bellhousing is different. His best bet is a 2.5 M20 from a 325i. Some people play and turn it into a 2.7 using an eta engine form a 3/525e car.

If he really wants a decent conversion, best one is an M50 engine- that will fit his tranny's bellhousing also, but there is a lot of electrics to do- and other bits and pieces to make it fit...
