Have had the car for about a month now, love it. The two things I haven't quite sorted out are:

    1. Cold start noise. The engine doesn't seem to be getting proper lubrication if its been sitting for a while, after the noisy start you can hear the lifters for 15-30 seconds as well. Has a new OEM oil filter and 5w-40 synthetic. Have some 0w-40 I was going to put in so it would pump sooner, but I'm not sure it will help. I found this link http://bmwe32.masscom.net/johan/oilf..._canister.html
not sure if that applies to the M50?

    2. Rear windows. The driver side rear window doesn't want to move at all, have tried the door-slamming trick to no avail. Passenger side usually goes part-way down but doesn't like to come back up. Seems like the window gets pushed towards the front of the car too much when the motor is pushing it up. Both front windows work fine, so I was thinking the motors in the rear may be worn out?
This is mainly due to your car having Hydraulic Lifters. The oil recedes back down to the pan, and it takes a few seconds for it to get flowing back into them again. It's normal, my M62 does the same thing and it's been deemed normal. You could try a thinner oil if you want, or even a very thick oil that won't recede as fast. 5-10w30 is what's recommended on that car.

your car is gorgeous - the plastic window slides have probably popped off their guides - either way you have to take the door panels off to see...

Right, go get the sliders before you open the panels. I replaced all of mine after I got it to prevent future failures. Clean the slider tracks of the old grease and use a synthetic grease so it wont dry out over time.

I have exactly the same car as you, down to the colour. I have been running 5w50 castrol syntec to get rid of the same type of lifter noise. i have been previous been running 5w40 mobil 1 but found it to be noisier than the 5w50. I have close to 400 000 km, and my car is a 91.

Mobil 1 is a particularly noisy oil. Doesn't seem to matter what weight you use. Conventional oil will be quieter than Mobil 1. And if you want quieter than conventional try using Amsoil. I run 0w30 Series 2000 Amsoil in my M-Sport, and it's nice and quiet. The Amsoil Euro Formula (5w40) is also quite nice in E34's. I like the Series 2000 a little better than the Euro Formula though.

Try it, I think you'll like it. I'd seriously go with either the Euro Formula, or the Series 2000 0w30. I've run the Euro in an S38, an M50, and a 1.8l Miata. All ran much nicer on that. Run the Series 2000 0w30 in my M60, and in my '79 Chevy truck. Tried their 20w50 in the truck, but it pushed the oil pressure up a little too high. And higher oil pressure equates to less oil being circulated per minute, which equals oil than runs hotter. You want somewhere near 1PSI oil pressure per 100RPMs for maximum flow & protection. And the 0w30 Amsoil works very well for nearly achieving that pressure vs. RPM ratio. And the 20w50 was waay too thick to come close to that.

You should notice that it'll rev a little better above 3,500-4000RPM or so. And it'll turn over easier as well. Wished I'd heard of Amsoil a long time ago (I've only been running it for 3 years or so).
