i would like to rent something that gets at least 50 mpg, and am not seeing anyone that rents a car like that. the local flexcar/zipcar depot has hybrids, but they charge 70/day plus the yearly membership. thanks.

Yes... there are a couple who rents out hybrids... I did a search on this a while ago. Hertz has them in your area. Prius, Fusion, Camry Hybrid... Others has them too. Avoid airport or you will pay airport tax too.
