    Default Can a E28 5 speed be swapped into a 535 E34?

I always thought that the E28 post 1985 Transmission (Getrag 260/6.01) could not be swapped into a E34 535i, I do not remember why.

Can someone tell me if that is a possible swap or not? I know that the 265 will work, but I an not sure about the E28 Getrag 535i tranny: 23001221208

    The E34 has the 260/6.03 23001221327

    Thanks.

i think they will swap, you just can't go the other way and put a B35 tranny in a b34 car as they don't have any place for the sensors

ditto what Winfred said plus I think you have to cut & splice some custom business for the shift linkage.

This has been done to my car. I made a thread about it. http://www.bimmernut.com/forum/showt...hlight=mystery
Looks like the shiftlinkage and been custom made and the drive shaft is custom made as well. Also the gearbox support bracket has been modified to suit the E34 chassis.

The gear boxes look almost identical side by side, I wouldn't think that the driveshaft or shift linkage needs to be changed, except if you are using a 265 getrag (the one in two pieces from the '85 535i)
Maybe the output shaft will have to be replaced.

I am installing the gearbox tonight in the car, with the rarity of the E34 gearbox, knowing if the E28 will fit or not would be a great help...
So, tomorrow you will know the definite answer, and I will do a quick write up in the website.

    Default Yes... And No

A E28 535i tranny will fit the E34 without any problem, it will bolt in and it is the same size.

The output shaft has to be modified, the part tha goes into the driveshaft is conical, you need to grind it so it is a cylinder like the E34 one.
This isn't a critical part, I think it is design to be there in case of the guilbo destroying itself.

So, if you cannot find a E34 tranny, you can always find a cheaper E28 one and modify it.
