1994 BMW 540iL?

Does anyone know the difference(s) between the 540i and the 540iL?

L is for long wheelbase (meaning a few extra inches in the back seats), but I was unaware that they ever made a long-wheelbase 5-series. I've only seen it on 7s. Huh! Learn something new every day!

There is a 740iL where the L is for the long wheelbase.

Not too rare. I have a 1995 530 in that same color with 154,000 miles on it.

The difference is that somebody accidentally typed an "L" at the end of one of the model designations.

That's a standard-wheelbase E34, and there was not an "L" version made AFAIK.
