i need help & advice on cd changer.......

i have a factory head unit & changer.
the changer that came with the car was the pioneer changer.
the pioneer had no issues playing my cd-r's.
it has since died. my nephew gave me his 6 disk alpine from his e36, but it does not read cd-r's consistantly.
has anyone else experienced this?
should i just get another pioneer changer?
