e39 exhaust, help me out guys

okay, here's the dilemma. My 2000 540i has an entirely different sound with factory exhaust all the way to the muffler(with a dinan muffler) and my buddies 1997 540i has a MUCH better tone with his exact same exhaust set-up. the only variable I haven't eliminated is factory exhaust changes from 97 to '00. Does anyone know if there is a difference? If so, where is it at? (ex: different cats)

do you know for a fact that they are the same catylictic converters and exhaust manifolds from 97 to '00? just trying to eliminate all variables before I got hacking up my exhaust haha

your 00 has precats, the older car does not, that will account for the different sound. If you can find someone selling a set of used m5 exhaust manifolds (S62) you can use those, no precats, pretty much the same as early 540's.
