    Default m30 oil question

I've done some reading, but I can't really decide on what oil i should use in my 535i. I've always ran 10w-30 in my m20 525 and it was just fine, however from what I understand, the m30 likes it a little thicker. What should I use? 10w-40? 15w-50?

I'm in KY btw ... summers are generally 85-105 degrees and winters around 0, sometimes dropping to -10 or so.

And is there any benefit or negatives to using "high mileage" oils (as far as dino oils are concerned)?

Thanks all in advance, and sorry for sounding like a novice here, but I genuinelly can't decide what to put in the car.

i like chevron delo 15w40, it's diesel rated oil and has quieted down everything i've put it in, from my much abused 200k e30 to a 10k fresh build with all new parts e30 that belongs to the other mechanic at my shop, both of us ran castroil 20w50 but when i got my truck i had a ready supply of delo on hand and tried it, probably reduced the valve train clatter by 30% (general impression from driving past guard rails with the windows down)

Would there be any sideeffects to using a diesel rated oil in a gas engine? And how does the chevron diesel rated oil compare to regular gas engine 15w40 in your opinion?

thanks again for replying to my thread; i was secretly hoping you would chime in.

I would also like to know more about this. I use 10W40 Castol High Mileage with Restore and besides the noisy valves I'm happy with the performance and reduction of oil consumption.

if you look at the "doughnut" on the lable it's rated for spark ignition engines too, S_ and C_ the 2nd number is the standard, whatever the curent one is, i think they went from I to J on compression ignition for the new ulsd diesel

I use 10-w40 Castrol Magnatec and i'm really happy with it. Changing it every 3 thousand so i would imagine whatever you choose you'll be fine (i'm no expert however).

I hate to ask a question on someone elses thread (so i hope you don't mind - maybe this will help you)- but i read that the m30 (535i) should take 5.8L of oil, and when i fill mine it takes only 5L. Anyone else had this issue? Seems a bit scary... Even scarier when we changed my friends oil in his e36 320i and it took 7L!

Car runs perfectly, uses no oil/coolant (since hose repair!), and performance is good. Hoping there's not a problem...

Good luck with the oil change.

According to the Bentley, 5.75 liters with filter change.

Don't worry about it ... as long as it's got enough it's fine ... some oil stays in the engine.

I use 20w-50 in mine, but only because AAP had 50% sale not too long ago and I bought enough to fill a tanker. It's been fine so far and I haven't really noticed any difference between that and the 15w-50 I used before.

How much is supposed to come out? I have a leaky front crank seal and I got just shy of 5 quarts out of it.

I run 15-40 in the 535 and the M5, they like it thick!

Just make sure you give it an xtra few to get up to temp before any romping!
