    Default How much fluid, tranny and diff, 1991 525i 5 speed

    I would like to replace my tranny and diff fluid this weekend, and I was wondering what the capacities were for my transmission and diff. Also, do I need a friction additive, and if so, which one?

    It doesn't really matter what the quantities are, because you'll unfortunately have to purchase 2 quarts of each fluid to do the job, and then you just fill until its full. I think book spec is like .9 for 1 and 1.2 for other (cant remember off the top of my head) but I know that I had to open the second bottle for each.

    I have the 3.73LSD, and I dont run any friction modifier in it.

    My owners manual states;

    1.1 Quarts ( 1 Liter) for Tranny.

    1.8 Quarts (1.7 Liters) for the Diff........

    Remember you need GL-4 for the transmission, and GL-5 for the Diff.

    I recently did a drain/refill on my Tranny with Redline MTL , Good stuff ! Shifts much better now..... Had a notchy feeling to the shifting before.....

    Just remember to always loosen the fill plug first when doing these type of fluid changes.

    The last thing you need is an empty tranny and a stuck fill plug...
