The "Stefan Borch" method works for all of our fleet (e32/e34/e36). You've got the right pins, but the timing & sequence is critical for some cars:

1989 525I ive got the graduated scale,it goes from green to yellow to red.i tried grounding pin #7 in the 20 pin diagnostic connector but it did not reset the scale.where am im making an error? thanks bones

Someone on bimmerforums left a little note on one of the service interval reset threads that I found very useful. If you don't have a wire already handy that you plan on using, an RCA cable (as in the red, white, yellow cables to connect components to the TV) works excellent to connect the pins temporarily.
