my car does that too, I think it might be wheel bearings but cant find any serious play in either front wheel. I think in this situation you dont fix it till its broken.
I drove my friend's 1990 535ia w/45k last night, the car is stock, and after I applied the brakes there was a "moan" that appeared to be coming from what i would estimate the front of the transmission area. as always, any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks

braking for what seemed like a prolonged period (at least a minute). Even when the car is stopped. Do master cylinders or othe brake system components ever make noise? Thanks for your input though, sorry I didnt give all the details the first time.
I had an 1982 E28 520i /automatic transmission/350.000 km/ and it did the same thing, specialy after a longer drive at same speed and I was absolutely positive that the sound came from the transmission box. Everything worked fine and I drowe it with the ocasional moan sound for a long time and nothing happened - sold it and it still runs like hell!
Mine used to do the same when the fluid got to a low level in the PS system
