    Does the key for a 89 535i have a chip? Or is it just a plain ole metal key?

    it was in 1994 when EWS started to be used i think.

    hmm, i think only people with 01/1995+ got EWS. Mines 08/1994 and i don't think i have it...

    It's in the cars built 12/94 and onwards. But I've encountered a few cars which wre made then which have some of the EWS bits, such as the grey label 413 DME and the antenna ring around the ignition, but don't actually have EWS-II.

    That car was in Taiwan.
