converting 535i auto to standard

I have a 1990 535i with a bad automatic. I also have a 1987 535is with a standard shift. All I have research leads to the fact that the standard in the 1987 will easily transplant to the 1990 automatic. The transmissions are the same Gertrag 260 5 speed.

Any advise, technical support or direction would be appreciated.
