Default M60/M62 engines... did they put the M62 in very late E34s?

Ive been reading up on a few of the engines and Ive been told that the very very late E34 540 came with a non-vanos M62 4.4 but I always thought that the M62 4.4 only started in the E39?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

In Europe the E34 was available from Feb. 1988 at first only with the six cylinder engines as 520i (129HP), 525i (170HP), 530i (188HP) and 535i (211HP)
The Diesel 524td (115HP) came out in March 1988.

In September 1988 the M5 came with 315HP. In April 1990 the M50 4-valve engines were introduced., which had in the 520i 150HP and in
    the 525i 192HP.

Smallest engine was the 518i with 4 cylinders and 113HP, which later was replaced by the newer M43 engine with 115HP. From September the Touring came onto the market, and the 4-wheel drive 525ix as well as new Diesel engines 525td and 525tds one month later. From May 1992 a new engine in the M6 had 340HP, from September that year the M50-engines got more torque by the VANOS technology.
One month later the V8 M60 was introduced in the 530i 218HP and in 540i 286HP
Production of the older engine type in 530i and 535i was stopped. From 1995 the 518g Touring was sold, which had a bivalent drive (fuel and gas).
All these market introduction dates refer to the German market.

So for the E34 series only M60B30 and M60B40 were produced.

I looked up it just to make sure, and I think what you might have read was wikipedia. It said the 3.5 L M62B35 was introduced in the 1996 535i. That is correct, but the 1996 model wasn't e34. It really wasn't a 1996 either, technically its a 97 as BMW made no 1996 5 series.

Correct me if I'm wrong someone.

EDIT: Shogun isn't it the M60B40? M60B50 is news to me.
EDIT EDIT: Oh haha, you fixed it while I wrote this

In Oz there were certainly a lot of E39s made in 1996 sold. Would BMW really have stopped producing 5 series cars for a whole year ? - hard to imagine.

The 10/95 M-Sport still has your typical M60B40, and they're some of the last E34s ever produced.

What about a M62 replacement engine? I was wondering about this very thing. My '94 had the Nikasil engine replaced in '96 by BMW. My uncle said it was a '96 motor.

The last time I had her in for an oil change, they had to go find a different filter as the '94 filter from the book didn't match.

The M60 Nikisal engines that were replaced with Alusil (by BMW)...received the M60 B40 or M60 B30 Alusil engine block...NOT the M62 Alusil engines (even if it was 1996)

(this applies to the e34s imported to the USA...I'm not sure what happened in other markets)

And as far as the oil filter...when you look at the parts diagram (ETK or RealOEM.com)...you'll see that for cars with a 9/95-up prod date...there is an alternate oil filter: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...11&fg=30&hl=12

So if you originally had an M60 engine produced prior to 9/95...then replaced it with an engine after 9/95...you may have gotten an engine that has an oil reservoir with the "modified dome" which requires the different oil filter.
