Might not be that impressive on paper but still more than the 540i... Have you driven the E46 M3? Trust me, it's not a slouch... 0-60 in 4.8 seconds...! Anything off the line requires torque (torque makes movement/rotation possible and then the horse power take over).

Of course I have driven E46 M3s. I am not calling them slow. But in the discussion of fitting a non-original engine in an E34, an S54 would be nothing more than an interesting project. They typically dyno 260 - 270 whp with torque pretty far behind it. Our cars don't need horsepower, they need torque. Very few of us are going to truck down a highway at 160mph, but a ton of us want to squat the rear end from 45 mph

I guess there are better options than a M3 engine in E34. Maybe, a V8 with a supercharger...

Spot on bro. I had a E46 M3 and sold it primarily becuase I was stupid and bought the SMG . Great car but it never felt that quick to me, but then again I guess I am more a turbo shove in the back type of person. E34's need grunt.

Sold your M3??? M3s are not the fastest car out there but their handling is second to none unless you go with a pure sports car like P-cars (Porsche)! Still the power is enough at 333 H.P. to keep a smile on my face. I have 6 speed manual but SMG is faster. I don't care how fast anyone can shift but it will never be as fast as SMG. One of my buddy has SMG and sometimes when it comes to driver's race, you could win or loose by not shifting fast enough or missing it... I purchased 6 speed manual because I enjoy the more sporty feel of shifting gears even though I would loose to a SMG equiped M3s.

By the way, my M3 is faster to 110 m.p.h. (or two car lengths to 1/4 mile) than this 928 S4 (photo - next to the M3) which puts out over 400 H.P. (many mods). Of course, after 110, it will pass me up with ease.

My Mase (heavily modded) puts out more torque than H.P. I think around 245 H.P. and 260 torque. Yeah, blast to drive since it is only 2380 lbs.

Auto transmission is basically a GM 4L60E, which is adequate for a warmed up 350 inch motor, like 500 ft-lb torque.
