    Default Neutral Safety Switch

So my auto transmission works just fine, however...
When moving the shift lever to neutral the shift indicator in the instrument cluster, the "N" for neutral if I jiggle the shift lever slightly will go on and off. No effect that I have noticed with the tranny but annoying none the less. Can something be tightened up? I suppose it could be cleaned but if I go through the trouble of pulling it out might as well change it. Is there a go write up on this somewhere? Any suggestions?

    TIA

Pretty easy to get to. Cleaning sounds exactly what your needs. Here's a link:

Jim, I have the same issue in my 1990 535. I have removed the A/T shifter 'floor' and see the metal steps for shifting location. I see there is a large one which allows the shifter to move into Neutral or "D" w/o any restriction. I will be interested if the above 'fix' solves your problem. It did not solve mine.
