Standard shocks are fine, you will need to shorten the bumpstops.
Hey Guys, Got a 89 520i and want to lower the suspension by 40mm using lowering springs, do i need shortened shock absorbers to do this or will the lowered springs fit onto the standard shock absorbers i've got on the car just now ?
many thanks
Fraser

well, the stock shocks should support till about -40 shorter springs. i'd go for shorter shocks just in case, because this is borderline lowering.
The amount of time and effort to install new springs makes sense to buy new shocks designed for the shorter springs. Unless you want to do the job twice in term of cost or time.
I installed eibachs (pro kit) with stock boges with no problem. I have yet to bottom out and the car handles fine.
