Custom car usage. Or more to-the-point, making it look more old-timey. I don't require upping the power of the engine as factory horsepower is really quite usable, especially in something lighter, but I didn't know there was a model of the engine with a normal distributor.

Can you see 9:1 or even 10:1 without any problems and without a huge hassle on these motors?

using euro parts you can get high compression a carb and a distributor depending on what block you are basing it on, i use to have a 2.0 euro m20 with a carb but after about 5 years no bought it so i crushed it in the car it was a 80 320-6 (not a 323 they are injected, atleast all of the ones i've seen)

dumb down, hell i am trying to make mine smarter just haven't decided how smart yet, depends on what i decide the engine will be m20 m30 m88/s38, may build a smart m30 just because i have m30b35s coming out of my ass around here but i have a chubby for a m88 or a s38 i could toss one of those in nearly stock and be happy
