I believe side-load refers to the fact that the cover-plate is bolted to the side of the differential (instead of the rear) and the gearing loads-in from the side where the driver's side output shaft is.

I just looked at an 82 633 and it did indeed have the side loader differential in it (from the drivers side). Strange looking..
