fluid and filter changes are more preventative and are rarely able resurrect a fried trans.
hi everyone, i have a 90 525i at with 198,000 miles on it. the tranny is only engaging and moving in reverse, i had it on blocks the other day and put the car into drive and the tires went forward... so i was utterly confused. does anyone know a remedy like draining the fluid or maybe cleaning the valve body? well any help would be verymuch appreciated!!
thanks

Vee ave vays of dealing vid your kind...........
If it hasn't been rebuilt I would say 198k on an automatic trans is really quite good.
I managed to get 187k out of a GM 700R4 but only because of liberal use of Lucas Transmission treatment and a very light foot on the throttle.
It finally blew a front main seal on the freeway, smoking out everyone behind me for a 1/4 mile.

if you don't have the m50 engine in your car, or you aren't in the US or canada, you probably don't have the gm transmission. are you certain that the transmission is gm?
i was hoping that the trans wasnt fried, seeing how reverse still operates i was hoping there might be some way of checkin b4 spending thousands to fix it.Originally Posted by Blitzkrieg Bob
Do you see the "trans program" message from the console? Searc for "trans program" in this forum. Tons of discussion about this. My tranny has 150k miles on it. I am worry about it too.

sounds like the clutch packs fried, replace the whole trans with a known good unit. dont mess with someone rebuilding the thing...a complete waste of time and money. should be able to pick up a used trans for a reasonable amount.
