How hard is it to replace the alternator on a 1992 535i?

Easy, so long as you have the right replacement. Just remove and replace except- disconnect the battery first, make sure you undo the rear locking bolts before winding the adjuster in to slacken the belt.

Often its easy to take it off and have a refurbisher replace the winding, brushes, stator, regulator and bearings. Same thing as a new one if they get the paint right.. takes a day if they are nice- many have a replacement they can swap with yours on the spot.
