he has coil on plug ignition, no distributor.

check the running voltage from the alternator, should be something like 13.8 and stable.

the MAF could be suspect, is it the original?

do a fuel pressure test to see if the regulator is working, a rupture could cause excessively rich idle and running under low RPM situations, but go back to normal as the RPMs increase.

    this sounds !

My thinking is that if it's been sat for four months (and it was working OK before it got laid up) then its possible the valves and in particular the injectors have become gummed up and are not sealing properly. Now if there's any carbon deposits in there, with leaky injectors and valves it could get pretty bad.

I just finished a tank of BG 44K. Don't think it is build up on mine.

I think I am going to try some spark plugs from BAVAuto. I really don't think my car had the issue before I started messing with the plugs.

Also, is there a way to see if the VANOS is working properly?

Ok checked basically almost everything, check the current coming from the alternator and all the sensors, did a pressure test on the fuel system, changed all the injectors even the good ones might as well since I have plans of keeping her and still same thing.
Gave up brought it to any indy and did all the diagnostic test and said that it was the box, so at this point I'm looking for a used computer (5 speed manual) 1992 525i. I don't have the part # with me right now have to drop by or call the shop to get but if there's anybody who knows who has selling I would greatly appreciate it. Again guys thanks for your input, I'll post also on the classified ads section, once I have the part #.

Acidfire, put on today the new box well, I guess that was my problem after all. She's perfectly ok now, running smooth and strong. For curiosity sake, I tried putting back all the parts I replaced with the new box and it was still ok. Guess it was the box after all, looking at it from a different perspective it is still good that I checked and did all diagnostic atleast I now have more peace of mind and feel good about her. You might want to check your box too if you have the same issues.
Guys, thanks again for all the input really appreciate it.

Now, did you get another box with the same number? Does it matter what year I get it from? I am guessing I have to have a '93+ one as I have VANOS.
