Catalytic converters dont ruin mufflers.
MY muffler rusted off recently and I'm considering different exhaust options. At the muffler shop, they told me that I also need new converters and a resonator. They quoted me $450 for custom setup and they also said that they would have to switch to a single tip muffler. I figured that I could do all of this without replacing converters, but they told me that as a consequence, the new resonator and muffler will go bad in a matter of months. So now I don't know what to do. I wll be selling my car within the next few months. So how should I go about this?
a. replace the whole system after the header pipes for $450 and convert it to a single - tip muffler
b. replace the resonator and a muffler and leave the converters alone
c. weld in straight pipes and eliminate the muffler alltogether.

Hmm, unless you want it different I'd go for a stock muffler which here runs about £130
they do if they start spitting chips out the exhaust when they are f-edOriginally Posted by Jon K

Straight pipes, a bad cat cant ruin those.

well, I ended up getting new cats and a universal muffler. They eliminated the resonator, but the car is still wayyyy too quiet for my liking.
Side note on loud exhaust..
I picked my car up this last weekend, loved how it sounded. Had a nice growl at the low end. Thinking it was replaced, look under the car, Nope... All rusted.
