Default New is almost always a waste.

Oh yeah, specially if u goin low profile.
Even decent aftermarket might not be up to the task. ‘Helga’ the touring managed to bend both right Borbet TypeT 17s in a pothole...............a week after i bought em. Now that hole might have wasted a throwing star too, but you never know. And tourings are piggish e34s. Less a loss since i got them used.
Still OEM wheels, particularly BMW’s, seem a little more resilient. Personally i would rather buy nice used stock over new. If you keep them up, you get yer money back when u sell (or even make some if refinished).

I agree that most BMW wheels are stong and it is always good to keep its resale value. I have hit very large potholes here in Chicago using the BBS 7spoke #19 wheels from the e39 and the T-stars w/o bending anything. I do think the potholes will break a strut or strut bearing before the wheels bend. Scott H had a slight bend (strut bearing imprint) on his strut tower from a pothole with his T-star still being intact. I will say that the BBS and the forged wheels do make a difference. I cracked a cast Alpina #32 wheel on my e39 on a very big pothole. The crack split the rim down the middle radially, separating the face side from the rear side.
