Wow thats very interesting to look at from a mechanics point of view , i never realized that the 917's were 12 cyl, you learn something new everyday![]()
stumbled across this http://www.pbase.com/917carl/917_12_cyl_engine&page=3
pictures of the Boxer 12 from the porsche 917! I've always been facinated by the air-cooled porsche engines, I am guess the cylinders would be magnesium like the early 911 engines.

Wow, that is just one physically massive engine. Quite astonishing when both heads are installed. Amazing enough air can circulate around the cylinders to keep it cool, but there is a lot of engineering we're not seeing. No plastic impellers to worry about.

well yeah but then again 2.7L mag 911 engines from the mid-70s snap head studs because someone f-ed up the expansion coeffecients so the head and cylinder expands more than the studs!
plastic impeller vs magical breaking 2.7L head studs. hmmmmm not sure which is worse

Wow.
Imagine supporting that engine on that slim bit of timber.
I was expecting the next picture to be one of the engine on the floor, bent.

its levitating Bo, either that or its being supported by the engine stand![]()

but read up on that exact issue....car had about 78K on it.... instead I opted for the 87 325is (E30) HOOAHHH>... it's been BMW ever since... but I still dream about owning a nice 911.

Amazing. I rebuilt the engine in my old 89 911 right down to splitting the case and reshelling it. Interesting they don't use any chains in the 917 engine, everything is spur gear drive, even the fan drive. I would love to hear one of those in the flesh.
All those gears meshing, no water jackets to inhibit the mechanical racket........man I miss my 911. The wife said it sounded like a Mack Truck, one of the many compliments I got while having it!.
