I had that happen on my E28 once. I was on the freeway at about 55-60, started to shake violently. Turned out to be a stuck caliper.

Car has had a bad case of "road wandering"
Took it into a shop and they checked the front end and found no problems about 2 months ago.
They said the wide tires were the culprit.
I noticed that when I stop slowly, there is a little give like something is loose.
Last week, driving and when I hit about 55 mph, the front end started shaking so badly that I pulled over expecting a wheel to be broken or held on by only 1 lugnut.
Wheels appeared to be tight.
I can reproduce this shaking just by driving about 55.
Any ideas on what I should be looking for now?

My gosh, definitely search for "vibration" "shaking" "shimmy" and all it's acronyms. Such a generic topic (shakes at 50) are dime a dozen here.
