Hey everyone,

Just a heads-up and a bit of a step-by-step instruction on how to register your nickname on the Rizon.net network. Note that this isn't required if you just want to jump on IRC and chat to some of the guys from this forum (including me!), but if you plan to come online often you may be interested in registering your username/nickname on the network.

Registering your nickname is a simple process, but may be baffling to some who aren't accustomed to using command lines and typing a lot to do stuff. If you plan to be a regular in the channel, it is slightly more beneficial to register than just connecting and chatting away. Benefits include:
a) Owning the nickname you are using
b) Disallowing other people to "borrow" or "steal" your nickname -- ie. connecting when you're not online and using the same username as you
c) Higher access levels in channels -- to become an "operator" of a channel that has powers to kick, ban, change topic texts, promote or demote other users etc, you will need to have a registered nickname.

Registering is easy. As soon as you're connected to the Rizon.net network, type the following:

/msg Nickserv register password email

Obviously, replace 'password' with a password of your choosing, and 'email' with your email address. Rizon.net from memory disallows email addresses from Yahoo.com or Hotmail.com, so I used the email address from my internet service provider. Passwords are Case Sensitive -- Banana is different to banana, which is different to BaNaNa. They must also be at least 5 characters long, and cannot contain spaces.

Once you have figured out a password and email address, plug that into the command above. Shortly you should receive an email at the email inbox that you specified above, that tells you the following information:
a) The nickname you registered
b) a command that you have to enter into your IRC client to complete the registration.

Enter the command as specified, and the registration process should be completed.

From now on, whenever you connect, you will need to identify yourself. This is telling the Rizon.net network that you are who you say you are. This is to ensure that no one impersonating you comes in and receives the same access privileges as you have.

To do this, type the following whenever you connect:

/msg Nickserv identify YourPasswordHere

Many IRC clients have functionality to plug in your password, and whenever you connect to the network the IRC client will type this automatically for you in the background. Having your connection set up like this makes things really easy -- I have this set in my IRC client (X-Chat Aqua) and I basically just click on the icon, and it connects and identifies me instantly and automatically. If you have any problems with registering, come into the #bimmer-info channel and ask around -- if anyone's awake, they most probably are able to help you out.

come on people, just use opera browser. it has integrated irc. and mail client.and you can open as many pages as you want in same browser. and other stuff. oh yea... it's free.

well I tired it and itwouldn't work, couldnt conenct ot the servers. Besides which Mirc costs MONEY> and f that.

Last time I was on IRC was 1998 I think, or maybe 1997.

Yeah I'm getting connection errors here too -- give it an hour or two and it should be back up. You have to remember IRC networks are run for free without any payment or donations from its users, so it's pretty good value considering what you pay for

There are a few IRC clients out there which, admittedly aren't as 'good' as mIRC, however are free to buy and use. You could try those. I use X-Chat which have ports to many operating systems including Windows, you could try that, or if you use Firefox or Opera as your internet browser there are IRC plugins you could use to connect.

Uhm, just to reiterate Yiorgos' reply, if it wasn't free, I wouldn't have used it as a medium for users to correspond...and I've used irc since at least 1988. If you get that splash about buying mIRC commercially, wait till the timer expires and close it. mIRC program itself is quiet for the first 30 days usually then that box comes up, but you can continue using the program. You can use *all* the features of the program reguardless of how long you've had that annoying box up. Funny how that works huh?

Okay guys. This is for you PC users that still have trouble getting onto irc for live chat (I really pulled out all the stops this time).

Now you don't even have to follow the how-to that is finally stickied All you have to do is take this 1-meg file attachment, decompress the .rar file into your root directory (like C:\ for instance) and it will create a folder called Mirc62 with the entire program preset with all the necessary info. To simplify the process even further, I have removed all other channels and servers off the list, so that all you need, is all that's there.

The ONLY thing that needs to be done is a 1-time process of changing your nick (your on-channel name) to whatever name you use here on the board. I preset the nick of this program to say "BoardName" so you'll have to change it. The command to do so is in the .rar's comment but just in case you can't read it somehow it's simply :

/nick (your boardname) <= no parenthesis needed, I just used it to specify your name goes there.

If anyone needs instructions on how to open a .rar file, you shouldn't be on the internet anyway Hope to see you there.
